OFTEN news about the state of Mzansi schools leaves us despairing for the future of our children.
But Jabulani Technical High School has received a gift designed to boost its pupils’ maths and science scores.
SunEducation spoke to Awande Shangase (17), a grade 11 pupil at Jabulani, during the PPC Cement mobile lab handover.
“I am challenged by chemistry. I only got 53% last term. I have a tough time figuring out calculations but we all face challenges in maths and science.”
Science teacher Nomagugu Radebe said the school wasn’t performing well.
“Now our mobile lab will help teachers and pupils to understand troublesome subjects much better and boost their performance.”
The high-tech mobile science and IT lab was handed over to the school in Soweto last month. The lab is a portable structure.
It will be used to teach science by using forward-thinking, practical and interactive demonstrations, as well as appropriate material for revision and exam preparations.
Kabira Akoob, the corporate social investment manager at PPC, said: “As a responsible corporate citizen, our business prides itself on creating and supporting corporate social investment campaigns that make a real difference in the lives of the communities in which it operates.
“It is against this backdrop that Jabulani Technical was chosen as a beneficiary of corporate investment.”
The principal of Jabulani Technical, Themba Ngwenya, said: “We are grateful to be recipients of this social investment and receive this much-needed mobile lab.
“Surely it will help us improve our pupils’ results.”
