IN ORDER for Mzansi to have more engineers, our schools must produce more pupils who are good at maths.
This is what the non-profit organisation, South African Mathematics Foundation, hopes to help achieve with the South African Mathematics Challenge.
The competition, for pupils in grades 4 to 7, aims to improve their understanding of maths and build confidence.
Entries are open until 21 April.
Professor Johann Engelbrecht, executive director at the foundation, said they wanted to encourage pupils to become independent, critical and creative thinkers.
Those who score well win gold, silver or bronze certificates and awards such as gold or silver for best performing school, best new performing school, best participating school and more.
Engelbrecht said entrants write tests in May which consist of 20 multiple choice questions in order to qualify.
The question papers will be emailed to their schools. Pupils must pay R10 participation fee and an extra R25 if the pupil is attending school outside Mzansi.
