BIDVEST WITS head coach Gavin Hunt has denied rumours of division among players.
Wits started their defence of the Absa Premiership title in dismal fashion, failing to register a win in their five opening matches.
They lost 3-0 to AmaZulu, drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs, suffered a 3-1 loss to Golden Arrows, played a 2-2 draw with Free State Stars and lost 1-0 to Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City in their opening league match.
And the Clever Boys’ defence has been shaky, as they have already conceded more goals (10) than any other side prior to this weekend’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) games.
Wits found themselves at the wrong 13th positio of the Premiership table after their 1-0 victory over Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.
Speculation suggests coloured and black players are at war, which has resulted in poor performance.
But the four-time PSL winning coach quashed the rumours, saying: “My only problem is defence leaking goals. I don’t have any issues in camp.
“I’m not surprised, those rumours surface when any club is not doing well.”
As if that was not enough, SunSport has reliably learnt that some of the players, including Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo and left-back Sifiso Hlanti, were allegedly paid far smaller bonuses than what management had promised them.
This could have added to the problem, as veteran Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs complained following their humiliating defeat to Arrows two weeks ago that other players weren’t pulling their weight.
The former Pirates goalkeeper pointed fingers at some of his teammates for not working hard and taking their job seriously.
Wits signed big-name players like Steven Pienaar and Daylon Klassen hoping they would add stability in a bid to help them defend their title. But the duo have failed to live up to expectation so far.
