SUPERSPORT United attacking winger Thuso Phala says they won’t get intimidated by the hostile crowd or any off-the-field antics they might experience in Lubumbashi.
Matsatsantsa a Pitori travel to Democratic Republic of Congo this morning to face TP Mazembe in the Caf Confederation Cup final, first leg at Stade TP Mazembe on Sunday (3.30pm).
The return leg will be played at Atteridgeville’s Lucas Moripe Stadium next Saturday.
“We are strong enough to overcome intimidation. We have done well in difficult conditions to collect points away.
“I think the experience we have because most of our guys play international football has helped us a lot,” said Phala.
In fact, he says some players have been known to exaggerate harsh conditions.
“I think sometimes we tend to make a meal of it. You go somewhere and the flight gets delayed. It’s something opponents have nothing to do with, but some will start thinking it’s the other team.
“We were in Liberia this one time and had to circle in the air for two hours before we were able to land. That had nothing to do with our opposition.
“But we never get this electrifying atmosphere in South Africa – it’s not hostile, it’s the experience of a lifetime.
“Mazembe have a small stadium, it will be packed and we enjoy playing in front of such a crowd,” said Phala.
The speedy player hailed coach Eric Tinkler for not tampering with the strong foundation laid by Stuart Baxter. “The team has remained strong after coach Stuart left and luckily we have a coach who didn’t change much when he came to the club.
“He gave us more energy going forward and we showed our mental toughness to be where we are now. We have that mindset in every game we play.”
Although Mazembe are one of the most successful clubs in Africa, Phala says they are entirely beatable. The teams drew 2-2 at the same venue in the group stages of the Confed Cup and had a goalless draw in Tshwane.
Explained Phala: “It is a different ball game and mentality, as it’s the final. They know they must get the result at home, so it will be difficult.
“They are aware of the danger we pose – we had a tougher route to the final. They will be wary even though they’re playing at home.
“We won’t sit back, we’ll attack, as we want an away goal.”
