BAROKA FC coach Kgoloko Thobejane believes dribbling wizard Tshepo “Skhwama” Matete has helped win more fans for the club as they gear up for a season in the Absa Premiership.
The skilful midfielder has become the darling of football lovers at the Maimane Alfred Phiri (MAP) Games currently taking place in Alexandra, Joburg.
His dazzling skills and trickery on the ball have won the hearts of fans who believe football in Mzansi has lost its identity by ignoring players with flair, similar to the late Scara Ngobese and Jabu Mahlangu.
Matete returned to the township at the weekend to repay the fans with a display of his silky skills, as he was first spotted by Baroka boss Khurishi Mphahlele while participating in the MAP Games last year.
Said Thobejane: “Tshepo is a quality player and has a bright future ahead of him. Players like Tshepo want a coach who understands and knows how to utilise their talent. If you change his style, restrict or give him a different direction, it becomes a problem.
“He is one of the players in Mzansi whose type of football supporters enjoy. At Baroka, we have seen that fans are coming in numbers because of him and we are grateful.
“Our fans like being entertained and we should give them that.”
The soft-spoken Matete is delighted that his dream of playing in the elite league is finally a reality: “I have always wanted to play in the PSL and I am happy that Baroka have given me the chance to realise my dream.
“I will stay focused and continue to work hard to improve some aspects of my game to become a regular in the team.
“I know that playing in the PSL is not easy but I am ready for the challenge.
“I wouldn’t be where I am without the help of Maimane Phiri and his MAP Games. I have no doubt that his tournament will open more doors for other youngsters in the PSL.”
