LAST Wednesday the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Gauteng Provincial government and the City of Tshwane launched the 2017 Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run.
This year will be the fourth edition of the Mandela Walk and Run.
At the launch, the Foundations’ trustee Tokyo Sexwale shared some of his memories from the time he spent with Madiba on Robben Island to when they both serve a democratic South Africa
“Today we are gathered in this safe space to remember Madiba. In his name, we always strive to remind people of his values in his own long walk to freedom. This walk symbolises a commitment to Madiba’s beliefs and ideals,” said Sexwale
Sexwale announced this year’s theme of “Remembering Madiba: Deepening democracy and building an inclusive society” was chosen as a reminder for all to reflect on the society and the world Madiba dreamt of. He made reference to the activity of walking and running as symbolism for what we all South African should do to catch up with the world. “We are behind and must walk faster and run to address some of the promises that were made to the people”
This call reminds us to continue to fight injustice whenever it shows itself, and to build and country of Mandela’s dreams.
The race route goes pass five heritage sites, presenting the perfect opportunity for participants to familiarize themselves with the country’s rich history in real time.
Last year 15 000 participants took part and this year entries have been caped at
20 000 participants.
