SPAR Proteas captain Bongiwe Msomi is hoping they will build on their performance from the first Sanzea Quad Series last year.

Although South Africa didn’t win a single match, they were able to hold their own and draw with England in the tournament.

They lost to both Australia and New Zealand.

Norma Plummer’s charges will start their preparation for the netball series tomorrow in camp before the tournament begins on 28 January at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

South Africa will face England in their opening match (5pm) while rivals Australia and New Zealand will play in the first match of the day (3pm).

The skipper said although the Australian-born mentor was happy with the team’s improvement against the Roses, Diamonds and Silver Ferns, she would like to see more from the girls.

Said Msomi: “Like any other coach, she’s always expecting an improvement. She is a perfectionist. Even at training she expects a top performance, the same that she expects in a game.”

Msomi said although they hoped to walk away with two victories their aim was to at least give the top three sides a tough time on court.

“The most important thing for us is to play well. It will be tough, but we have been preparing for it, we are ready. We are looking for one or two wins, and know that a victory only comes from good performance.

“All we want is to do our best,” she said.

Msomi will play in her second UK Superleague season, this time for the Wasps. She played for Surrey Storm in the 2015 season.

She will likely remain in England after the third Sanzea Quad Series starting on 5 February should her visa be sorted by the time of the competition.

Fellow Proteas Karla Mostert and Lenize Potgieter will play for Lightning Sunshine Coast in Australia and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in New Zealand respectively.

“We travel to England on 1 February and have a few days before the competition start. I think we will have recovered enough by then to get back on the court,” she said.
