A WRIST injury suffered by seasoned campaigner Koos “The Great Last Warrior” Sibiya this week could keep him out of contention for the IBO Intercontinental Junior Lightweight title against unbeaten Muhamad “The Chosen Wan” Ridhwan in Singapore on 20 October.
The 36-year-old fighter from Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga, is scheduled to face-off with the 29-year-old boxer for the vacant crown.
Sibiya, who holds the WBF and African Union Boxing belts injured himself this week during sparring sessions. He hurt his left wrist and thumb.
The dedicated fighter is worried the injury might prevent him from exchanging blows with the Universal Boxing Organisation world junior lightweight champion.
Sibiya says he’s waiting for his doctor to confirm whether he will fight next month.
Said Sibiya: “I’m hoping and praying to get a thumbs up from the doctor. I’m disappointed because I’ve been working very hard to prepare for this fight.”
The Gauteng-based pugilist beat Namibian Samuel Kapapu to claim the vacant ABU Junior Lightweight title with a 12-round points decision at the James Motlatsi Hall in Klerksdorp last year.
He went on to successfully defend against Baina Mazola at Wembly Indoor Arena, Jozi, in April.
Sibiya has collected 20 victories, 10 defeats and four draws, while his counterpart is unbeaten on eight fights.
