PHILANI Zulu has dubbed it “the final before the final”.

And indeed the upcoming Telkom Knockout semifinal between Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits promises to be an epic clash.

In a media conference yesterday, the Chiefs defender also made the bold prediction that the team that wins at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday (3.30pm), will go on to clinch the Knockout competition.

Zulu is one of the “emergency selections”, the benchwarmers that have seized the opportunity to excel in the absence of injured regulars at Amakhosi.
“This is the game of the season for me,” said Zulu.

“This is our chance to get to the final and win a trophy. It’s been too many seasons without a trophy. And it’s in our hands on Saturday, to win and go forward.

“I’m looking forward to winning, because it’s expected of Chiefs to win a trophy every season.”

Admittedly, Zulu has benefited from the misfortune of injured defenders including the crocked Tsepo Masilela.

But to his credit, the 25-year-old has worked hard to entrench himself in the left back position, forming a solid defensive unit with emerging Daniel Cardoso, Siyabonga Ngezana, the versatile Joseph Malongoane and fit-again Eric Mathoho.

Zulu has played 11 matches including two cup fixtures so far this season, a significant improvement for someone who only played three matches last season owing to a contractual dispute with Maritzburg United.

“If you are in the first team you are regarded as a first team player. You are professional. We treat each other like senior players,” Zulu explained.

“With the injured players out, it helps to know we have players who can fill the gaps and there aren’t any bases left uncovered. It works to our advantage that everyone who plays gives his best.

“I give my best to the team. Football is a short career. You have to do your best when you get the chance.”

Zulu played in the 1-1 league draw with Wits last month, and acknowledges that playing the Students away can be tricky.

He refuses to read too much into their league blues, however, pointing to the unpredictability of knockout competitions.
