CAMEROON have thrown in the towel in their bid to qualify for their eighth Fifa World Cup tournament.

As things stand, the Indomitable Lions will need a healthy dollop of luck to make it to the finals in Russia next year.

They are languishing in third place in Group B of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with a mere two points following their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Nigeria on Friday.

The two sides meet in a return clash of the fourth round of qualifiers in Yaounde tonight, a match that Cameroon coach Hugo Broos has described as a mere formality.

“Why would we have a chance at the World Cup? We need to win all three games and Nigeria have to lose all three games, I don’t think that will happen,” said Broos.

“There is no pressure anymore. Nigeria have nine points, we have two. If we had won the previous game, we would have a chance, but we lost. I hope everyone will learn from this.”

Meanwhile, a collective sigh of relief by Mzansi will have greeted the result of the match between Burkina Faso and Senegal’s World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

The goalless draw between the West African teams means the battle to top Group D in the 2018 World Cup continues, as any of the four, which include South Africa and Cape Verde, could still make it to the finals in Russia.

Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 shock loss to Cape Verde was a serious blow to their mission to qualify for their fourth Fifa World Cup. But that was before a 10-man Senegal were held to a frustrating draw by the Burkinabe in Dakar on Saturday.

The result has taken the Stallions to the top of the group, albeit with just a point more than Senegal and South Africa, who are equal on three points. Cape Verde are bottom on three.

Elsewhere, Zambia moved to second place in Group B after they stunned Algeria 3-1 in Lusaka.

Platinum Stars striker Brian Mwila’s brace helped take Chipolopolo to four points. Nigeria top the group on nine points from three matches.
