IT’S going from bad to worse for Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits!
The Students troubled start to the season continued at the King Zwelithini Stadium last night where AmaZulu dished out a 3-0 hiding to the not so Clever Boys.
Gavin Hunt’s champions have failed to notch a win in their opening five matches and are stuck in second bottom with only two points from two draws.
But the game ended on a sour note for Usuthu’s goal scoring hero Michael Morton who scored a scorcher in the 11th minute but was send off in the 71st minute when he elbowed Wits substitute Gabadinho Mhango after the two players had an altercation on the pitch in which TV replays appear to show Mhango spitting at Morton.
Hunt admitted he was worried about the way his side have failed to keep clean sheets and he knows he has a problem on his hands with a date with early pace setters and unbeaten Orlando Pirates at home on Saturday next on their agenda.
Once again it was the champions Achilles heel, their defence that let them down in the 11th minute when they failed to clear a loose ball and from the edge of the area Morton hammered home an unstoppable shot. It was only the third career goal for the former Wits defensive midfielder.
AmaZulu turned the second half on its head when they won a soft penalty after defender Phumlani Ntshangase handled the ball inside the danger area on the hour mark. Rhulani Manzini stepped up and slotted home a powerful spot kick to make it 2-0.
Manzini made it 3-0 and game over two minutes later when he foxed the flat footed Wits defence and thumped home his side’s third goal to earn AmaZulu their second win of the season.
It was a superb comeback from the home side who were beaten 4-1 in a Durban derby by Golden Arrows at the weekend.
- In other matches played last night Baroka FC’s incredible early season form continued when they scored a 2-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium thanks to goals from Sipho Moeti and Gift Motupa
Golden Arrows edged bottom club Platinum Stars 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium to move to 11 points at the top of the table with Baroka and Pirates after five games.
