CONSISTENCY is king!
This is the view of veteran Maritzburg United defender, Bevan Fransman, as the Team of Choice plan to build on their dream start to the 2017-18 PSL season.
Their next target is Ajax Cape Town, who travel to Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg for their match tonight (7.30pm).
Fadlu Davids’ side is responsible for the African champions Mamelodi Sundowns no longer being in contention for the MTN8 following United’s 1-0 victory a fortnight ago.
Team of Choice chairman Farook Kadodia must have been running around his office like a kid with his first ice-cream last week after they also defeated Peter Butler’s Platinum Stars 2-0 in a league match.
But Fransman is not looking behind him but forward: “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. But there was no time to celebrate in light of our back-to-back matches. After Sunday’s win at Platinum Stars we had to fly straight back home to start preparing for Ajax.
“Luckily for us we had the opportunity to watch them play (against Golden Arrows) on Saturday. So we know what to expect.”
This match will be United’s first home game.
The former Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and Bloemfontein Celtic player said they were keenly aware of last season’s record at home and were cautious.
He said: “We have to win our first home game. Everyone knows what is expected of them. We are also aware of the expectations from fans following two good matches.”
Fransman could be the one wearing the captain’s armband tonight after the club’s new skipper, Denis Weidlich, got a knock on Sunday. Siyanda Xulu stood in for him.
The club’s operations manager, Quinton Jettoo, said the defender would go for a late fitness test last night to determine whether he would play or not.
- Meanwhile, United’s rivals Arrows will also be looking to collect maximum points when they host Bloemfontein Celtic at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu tonight (7.30pm).
Both teams got a point in their respective opening matches over the weekend.
Abafana Bes’thende drew 1-1 away at Ajax while Siwelele were held at home by Chiefs, the game also ending 1-1.
