KAIZER Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela says they are casting their net worldwide in their search for a proven goal-scorer.
Chiefs are on the hunt for a player capable of finding the back of the net this coming season. They are searching as far as Argentina in addition to locally and in Africa.
Komphela has his eye on a top Cameroon player.
He spoke to SunSport after their 1-0 victory over Free State Stars in the final of the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup at James Motlatsi Stadium in Orkney on Saturday.
Komphela revealed that Amakhosi won’t be making unnecessary signings in this transfer window but will work on the one part still missing from their puzzle.
He said: “The transfer market is difficult to operate in freely, it’s just too complex. We are consistently involved in discussions – we need a goal-scorer.
“There’s a difference between strikers and goal-scorers.
He explained: “We need somebody who can just bang in the goals, that will make a big difference. We had identified at least five players, who all upon identification went abroad – some went to Cyprus, Bolivia, others to Denmark – but we are searching, not resting. We want a top player to get us goals.”
Chiefs struggled to score goals in their Absa Premiership campaign last season. They scored only 39 goals in 30 league matches.
Komphela said the Maize Cup was fruitful in determining the level of fitness of his players as well as identifying areas where they still needed to improve: “It was a good exercise from a practice point of view. A lot of players got game-time, which is what you need when trying to get them into better physical condition.
“The outcome is okay. It gives us confidence. But there is still a lot of stuff we need to work on. Last season we were too generous, we need to rectify that.”
Komphela handed debuts to three of Chiefs’ new signings, Teenage Hadebe, Philani Zulu and Bhongolethu Jayiya, in the Maize Cup. Hadebe and Jayiya started in the 2-0 win against Township Rollers in the first semifinal and Zulu made his debut in the final against Ea Lla Koto.
Khotso Malope, back from his loan stint with Thanda Royal Zulu, was also given a run alongside other young players such as Wiseman Meyiwa and Itumeleng Shopane, who play for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge team.
