POLOKWANE City’s deadly striker, Rodney “Rama G” Ramagalela, is not bitter!
Ramagalela says he didn’t score a brace against Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday merely to prove a point.
He says Sundowns’ defence is very slow and poor, which is why he was able to put two past African Goalkeeper of the Year Denis Onyango when City shocked Downs with a 2-1 defeat at Loftus Versfeld.
This was City’s first win against the seven-time PSL champions in Downs’ backyard in five years.
The 28-year-old former Sundowns man was at his best, giving Downs’ backline of Thapelo Morena, Tebogo Langerman, Motjeka Madisha and Bangaly Soumahoro a torrid time with his quick runs.
“I knew I was going to score but never saw the brace coming,” said Ramagalela, who was loaned out to Golden Arrows by Downs before being ditched by coach Pitso Mosimane. “I’ve studied their defence. They were very slow and overconfident, and I took advantage of that.”
Ramagalela said he was not bitter towards Mosimane for axing him, nor was he playing to prove any point to anyone.
“Sundowns know what I am capable of,” he added.
“I am just enjoying my football. I want to help Polokwane City win games.”
He took advantage of Oupa Manyisa’s blunder inside the box to tap home before lobbing a ball over the advancing Onyango to seal the win for City.
Even Mosimane took note of the beautiful second goal, saying he doubted Ramagalela would ever be able to score such an impressive goal again in his football career.
“Ramagalela had a brilliant game,” he said.
And the striker promised to score more goals this season. “That second goal was not a fluke,’ he said. “I practise scoring from long range all the time. I will score more such goals this season.”
He refused to set himself any targets: “Our goal is to finish in the top eight again. I want to score but will count them when the season ends and we are in the top eight.”
