SIPHELELE Mthembu will undergo a medical test today in a bid to secure a deal with Bloemfontein Celtic.

Celtic joint caretaker coach Lehlohonolo Seema told SunSport that Mthembu would go for a thorough medical assessment before they decided whether to secure his signature or not.

He said this was standard procedure at the club to avoid making the same mistakes other coaches made by signing players with hidden injuries.

The 29-year-old striker has seen little action under Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela which forced him to search for greener pastures in Bloemfontein.

If signed, this will be Mthembu’s second spell with Phunya-Sele-Sele having played for them in the 2010-11 season while on loan from Orlando Pirates.

Explained Seema: “Siphelele will go for medical assessment at the Sports Science Centre. We want to avoid an incident where you sign a player only to find out that he has an injury later. This doesn’t mean that something is not right with him.”

Seema revealed that Mthembu was slowly regaining his scoring appetite as he looked a bit rusty when he arrived.

“He was behind the rest of the squad in terms of condition and fitness. We have pushed him and gave him extra training to catch up with other players. He is working hard at training, but nothing has been finalised yet.”

The former Bucs captain is also monitoring a few youngsters from their Multichoice Diski Challenge outfit in a bid to groom them into the first team. “There are players that we are looking at from our development structures and once the Diski Challenge is over in February we will know who to rope in,” he said.

Celtic will play a series of friendlies to ensure they are ready when the Absa Premiership resumes on 3 February.

They re-start their league schedule with an acid test against African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns on 8 February at Dr Molemela Stadium.

“We will play a friendly against the Lesotho national side today (3pm) at Dr Molemela Stadium.

“They are preparing for the Chan tournament and the match gives us the chance to gauge how far we are in our preparations. We’ll play about five friendlies, including one against Free State Stars to ensure our boys are ready.”
