AJAX Cape Town midfielder, Lebohang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena has bemoaned the extended PSL break due to the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
The Absa Premiership will only be back in action from 7 February to round up the second half of the season with teams having last played in December.
Ajax will resume their season with a visit to the Bidvest Stadium against Bidvest Wits.
Cheeseboy feels the break is too long and messes up the team’s momentum.
The Urban Warriors, who started the season on bad footing, seemed to be picking up in their last two matches last year scoring victories against Chippa United and Bloemfontein Celtic.
Mokoena and Nathan Paulse took to the field with the MultiChoice Diski Challenge team that walloped rivals Cape Town City 5-3 on the weekend.
“It’s been hard, it’s like doing preseason again,” the former Mamelodi Sundowns man said.
“Sometimes I wonder why we have to have this recess. It’s too long because when you come back you have to start afresh. I hope we can find a way to close the gap, even when there are tournaments. We need to find a way to be active as players.”
“It’s a bit of a disadvantage because when you find your momentum, you want to play until you finish the league.
“Playing well in the first game will be difficult.
“The players have just returned from holiday. You will see people holding their legs because of cramps. The recess might have taken it’s toll,” he said.
Mokoena seems to be rejuvenated in the Mother City after struggling to get game time at the Chloorkop side last season.
He said: “I am enjoying myself. They have made me understand my role at the club. I will also be undergoing small coaching courses. We have a lot of youngsters. Maybe I can help somewhere in the future while still playing.”
