Orlando Pirates' long-serving centre-back Lucky Lekgwathi has announced his retirement from professional football.
The 40-year-old announced his decision after the side's opening 3-1 Premiership win over Golden Arrows on Wednesday.
Tendai Ndoro was the star of the show as his hat-trick handed Muhsin Ertugral's men the three points. Bucs started the game slowly in the first period, with Arrows creating more chances in the opening stanza. But it was Ndoro who had the last say, netting a stunning second-half hat-trick to get Bucs' season off on the right note.
However, after the match at the post-game press conference, Lekgwathi made a surprise appearance and duly announced his retirement.
He said: "I'm emotional tonight because I think as Lucky I became a player for all fans, not just for Bucs. I want to thank all of you."
He added: "It's 14 years as a Pirate and 14 is my lucky number. 14 seasons and 14 Bafana caps. I'll miss this..."
Phinda Mzala concluded: "I was the first captain to lead a team to a double-treble and I hope I won't be the last to do it for this club."
