THE possibility of getting a sixth Absa Premiership medal to his name is the least of Daine Klate’s priorities at the moment.
The diminutive Port Elizabeth born Klate instead says he wants to fight for Bidvest Wits’ cause: To finally deliver the Absa Premiership title to Milpark come end of May.
Before their clash with Kaizer Chiefs at Bidvest Stadium tonight, Wits were in contention for the league honours, trailing leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by six points.
Should they succeed in overtaking Pitso Mosimane’s charges and clinch the title, it would mean Klate has won with three different teams.
He has done it with SuperSport United in the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, and with Orlando Pirates in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Speaking to SunSport after their 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in Durban, the 30-year-old Klate said: “Things are looking positive for us and I hope we don’t drop points in the upcoming games.
“I don’t have personal achievements on my mind but want to work for the team. It is important that this team wins something at the end of the season. The coach and his assistants are putting in extra hours at training to fine-tune the players.”
Another person at Wits set to win a record sixth personal league crown is goalkeeper coach Andre Arendse.
In his long career, he first won the National Soccer League title with now defunct Cape Town Spurs in 1995.
In the PSL era the former Bafana Bafana keeper won it with Santos in 2001-02, Sundowns in 2005-06 and twice with SuperSport in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
