PREMIER Soccer League rookies Baroka FC are confident they will find their feet soon and become a successful team in the Absa Premiership this season.
But Bakgaga head coach Kgoloko Thobejane, who had predicted that his side would cause many upsets in the PSL, was not happy after his side drew 1-1 with Ajax Cape Town in their maiden Premiership match played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.
“The first game was a test but I’m not happy with the result. We failed to convert our chances,” said Thobejane.
“Home games are important. They are the ones where we must collect maximum points. But as far as I’m concerned we are on the right track, we only need to start converting chances.”
It has became the norm that new teams promoted to the top flight are usually likely to be fighting relegation battles towards the end of the season.
Thobejane said his club’s first game in the top flight gave him insight on where they must improve. He believes the two-week Fifa international break starting on Monday will come in handy, as some of his strikers are still recovering from injury.
“Now we know where we are lacking, but it’s not a problem. We do have strikers, it’s just that they were not available for this game.
“We are still sorting out Cleopas Dube’s work permit. Both Sphiwe Gwala and Tshepo Matete are recovering from ankle injuries but I believe they will be available for our next game (against Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium on 13 September).”
He revealed that midfielder Loyiso Simandla was the only player who would be out for a long spell due to injury.
After gaining promotion to the top flight last season, the outspoken Thobejane made many bold promises and he’s still confident he will keep them.
“I know what is expected from me, and I will deliver what I promised. The boys just need one win and – that will change everything.”
