MZANSI’S track and field stars are enjoying themselves, some experiencing their debut Olympic Games in Brazil.
Stars such as Luvo Manyonga, Elroy Gelant, Lindsay Hanekom, Akani Simbine and Henrico Bruintjies are doing their best to relax ahead of the biggest week in their athletic careers.
The athletics portion of the Rio Games, which everyone has been waiting for, finally starts at the magnificent Olympic Stadium on Friday and runs until 20 August.
The track is ready to host the best of the best. SA athletes have been spotted taking selfies and making jokes with each other as they relax while the big day edges closer.
Handling their nerves as they perform in front of thousands of spectators – and multitudes watching on TV – will be key to succeed against Olympic veterans.
Hanekom said: “We are ready for the track and field events, the biggest thing is to relax! We want to enjoy ourselves and do the best we can on the track.”
Cracking jokes and laughing are good ways to relax one’s mind. Competing with the speedy Jamaicans and Americans, who have dominated these meetings in recent years, will not be easy.
It would seem a good call for those who are attending the Games for the first time, to enjoy the occasion and not put too much pressure on themselves. At the opening ceremony at the Maracana Stadium, SA athletes were seen mingling with those from other countries, some of whom are their idols. Reality may only sink in when they see them again on the track, lining up to compete.
Hanekom added: “The Olympics only happens every four years and you never know what might happen in the next four years. The whole point is to enjoy the experience.”
