CHESLYN Jampies, newly called-up Bafana Bafana player, let down his head coach at Jomo Cosmos, Jomo Sono, when he tackled Orlando Pirates’ Luvuyo Memela with double studs-up at the weekend.
Sono revealed to SunSport that he had a serious heart-to-heart talk with Jampies when he was first called up to Bafana and advised him to keep his cool, because the national team could build or destroy him.
“When I heard Jampies was in the national team, I spoke to him and gave him advice as a former Bafana coach.
“If you’re not careful then it will finish you, as is the case with many of the players who are finished today. If you get the Bafana story too deep into your head, you will be gone.
“When you go to the hotel with national team, and listen to all the wrong things, you’ll be gone. I said I hope he goes there with a sober mind.”
Jampies will miss Ezenkosi’s clash with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium tonight (7.30pm) as he serves the suspension, which Sono says has cost the team. “You don’t go in with a two-footed tackle against Pirates with Victor Gomes as the referee. Gomes will give you a yellow card even when you tackle with your tongue,” Sono said jokingly.
He announced his squad to face Chiefs to his players on Saturday and has made wholesome changes from the squad that lost 5-0 to Bucs. He will start with Lesego Modiba in between the sticks while resting Sherwyn Naicker.
Brice Aka, Sibusiso Kumalo and Pentjie Zulu will surely start against the bleeding Amakhosi.
Chiefs lost 1-0 to Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast in their Caf Champions League clash on Saturday and troubled head coach Steve Komphela will be out to restore some of their pride. Chiefs fans have already lost patience with Komphela, who hasn’t won any of their last three outings. Supporters have been campaigning on social media to march to Chiefs’ Naturena offices on 23 March to hand in a memorandum calling for the coach’s sacking.
Tonight the battle will be between the two goalkeepers – Modiba and Itumeleng Khune – to see who concedes first. But all eyes will also be on the strikers as they strive to hit the back of the net, as Camaldine Abraw in particular has been hitting blanks at Chiefs
