BIDVEST Wits secured a place in the MTN8 Cup final following a 3-0 aggregate win over Cape Town City in a one sided second leg semifinal match played at Cape Town Stadium last night.

The teams drew goalless at full-time as Wits had already scored three goals in the first leg played in Milpark that gave them an advantage in the return leg.

The Clever Boys will now face the winner between Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United in the final. The teams will battle it out in the second leg at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

Tinkler came into the match under pressure to reverse the 3-0 first leg deficit in a bid to reach the final.

Although, his defence let him down in the first leg as they made silly mistakes that allowed strikers Gabadino Mhango and Eleazar Rogers to score the goals that gave Wits an advantage, he showed faith on them as he started with the same defence that consist of Vincent Kobola, Tshepo Gumede, Renars Rode and Thato Mokeke.

The former Orlando Pirates mentor instead opted for an offensive approach as he partnered Lehlohonolo Majoro and Judas Moseamedi upfront, with James Brown also included in his attacking formation.

His counterpart, Gavin Hunt made only two changes to the side that won the first leg with goalkeeper Darren Keet replacing the suspended Moeneeb Josephs, while Xola Mlambo returns from suspension in place of Ben Motshwari who was on the bench.

The newly formed side were a shadow of what he wanted in the first half as Wits kept them on the back-foot in their own half with a quick passing game in search of the opener. It took City 20 minutes to get into Keet’s penalty box which proves they lacked the aggression that Tinkler complained about in the first leg.

Keet had an easy first half as he made his first save after 25th minute as City’s attack was blunt due to lack of supply of passes since they were always defending. City created only two scoring chances the entire match which is a big worry for Tinkler.
