Werder Bremen v Bayern Munich: Win for Bayern
Bayern Munich’s dominant 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the opening match of the new season showed that the reigning champions are continuing right where they left off – even in the absence of retirees Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso. Bayern Munich are huge favourites here.
Bremen failed to create the same attacking spark in their opener that we saw they had towards the end of last season, so the odds are definitely against them this weekend. ot to mention that Werder Bremen have scored just once goal against Bayern over the last seven meetings between them
Deportivo Alaves v Barcelona:Barcelona should win
Barcelona suffered a shock early season defeat against Alaves last term but there should be no repeat here. Alaves on paper are weaker this time around, with a number of successful loanees from last season not returning. The Catalans may have to work hard for their lead but this is a match they should win.
Girona v Malaga: Girona win
The story of the opening weekend in La Liga was Girona and their 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid. It wasn’t so much the scoreline but the manner of Girona’s performance that was notable.
They looked to have the game won at 2-0 and missed several chances to score more than two goals against one of the tightest defences in Europe.
Girona are likely to be even more positive here than they were last week as they target the win but they must be careful not to over-commit. Malaga also have a sharp finisher in the shape of Borja Baston and will fancy they can at least nick a goal.
Levante v Deportivo La Coruna: Draw
Levante might be wise to not get too carried away by their 1-0 win over Villarreal on the opening weekend either. It came via a late penalty and overall they aren’t an obviously better side than Depor and are likely to receive a few reality checks over the coming weeks as they try to adjust to the demands of top flight football.
The expectations on them to win this game will create a different dimension to what they had last week too and it’ll be interesting to see how they react to that. They look a little short at 6/5 in truth. Depor are quite a settled side and showed tentative signs of improvement under Mel at the back-end of last year.
SuperSport United v Maritzburg United: Win for Maritzburg
It seems like new Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids came with a good strategy that will benefit the club this season. In three matches that they have played including a cup competition the Team of Choice have won all three, and did not concede a single goal. Maritzburg knocked out Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter finals and they are likely to continue with their fine form.
Las Palmas v Atletico Madrid: Win for Athletico
Atletico had a pretty torrid time of it for long periods against Girona last week and were lucky to come away with a point. With Antoine Griezmann suspended, things won’t necessarily go any better here and there could again be value in backing both teams to score. Atleti have won five of the last six meetings, including a 5-0 win on this ground in April. They’ve won their last four away games against Las Palmas to nil.
