TEMPERS flared as residents and squatters came face to face over a piece of land on Monday.

The residents of the houses in Wattville, Ekurhuleni accused the squatters of turning the area into a pigsty, littering everywhere and making the place smell.

The residents confronted the squatters and told them to leave, but the squatters refused.

They gave them until 7pm on Monday night to remove their shacks, but instead the squatters threw stones at them and the police.

The Red Ants were called in to remove people who had erected shacks under the bridge.

“They are dirty, they litter and even relieve themselves everywhere because they have no toilets,” said the angry residents. “They also live under the bridge, which is not safe.”

A squatter said: “We are waiting for houses which may not even come. Where must we go?

“All we want is for the municipality to give us land and we will build our own houses.”

Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesman Clifford Shongwe said minimum force was used to move the angry squatters.

Ekurhuleni Municipality removed people from unsafe areas after a boy fell into a disused mine in Jerusalem, Boksburg.
