YOUNG PEOPLE from Lindelani rolled up their sleeves and cleaned up Mandlenkosi High School.
Their aim was to make sure that pupils in the kasi north of Durban could study in a clean and safe environment.
Lindelani Youth Forum founder Malusi Mahlaba (27) told Daily Sun what pushed them to clean the school on Friday was that they only want the best for the youth in the area.
“Mandlenkosi High is troubled by unruly kids who use old toilets and the bushy area behind them as a place where they take drugs.
“Knowning about this problem that troubled the teachers last year, we decided to go and clean up this year,” said Malusi.
He said they had also locked the old toilets to ensure they would not be used for drugs anymore.
Malusi added they hoped pupils at the school would see their effort as something positive that would help them become good people in the future.
“Their performance is poor and we strongly believe it has something to do with how they handle themselves at school.”
He said they heard about a number of stabbing incidents, as well as the beating of a teacher that happened on the school premises towards the end of the year.
He added about 18 youths took part in the cleaning initiative and promised they would keep it up at the school, as well as at other schools in the area.
“We want to show them that as unemployed youth we can contribute towards making our area a better place,” Malusi said.
