TWO greedy cashiers who stole about R102 000 from Kouga Municipality have had money confiscated from their pension funds.
The asset forfeiture unit confiscated the money from the two former employees of the office in Humansdorp after they were found to have stolen from the prepaid electricity section.
NPA spokesman Tsepo Ndwalaza said: “The unit handed over a cheque for R101 711,73 on Wednesday, which was to cover the money stolen by two employees of the Kouga Municipality.
“Mandla Siheula and Athenkosi Peter stole the money while working as cashiers for the prepaid electricity section of the municipality.
“Between July 2011 and March 2012 it was established that they had committed theft following a forensic audit.
“The money was deducted from their pensions. Mandla and Athenkosi were found guilty by the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court last year. They were sentenced to correctional supervision and fined R100 000 each.
“In March Mandla and Athenkosi were ordered by the Port Elizabeth High Court to pay back what they had stolen.
“We believe handing over the stolen money to the municipality will send a strong message: that crime does not pay.”
