A VIDEO explaining why a woman was sitting shut in a cage on the back of a bakkie has been posted on social media.

This after the disturbing photo went viral with people expressing shock at her apparent ill-treatment.

The woman, Linda, explains in the video that she chose to sit in the cage in the back of the bakkie because it was a hot day and she wanted to sit in the wind.

The video was posted on Andre Snyman's facebook page.

In a long caption under the video, it says: "I have the story behind the picture. She jumped on the back and climbed into the cage. The owner asked her if she wanted to sit in front and she said no. He then dropped her off in town. She wave thank you to him and he drove off."

The video shows a conversation in Afrikaans between Linda and another woman.

Here is a translation:

Woman: Your name is?
Linda: Linda.
Woman: OK Linda we're filming this video so that we can send it to the people who are busy making this story ugly. So please tell the camera there what happened, how your lift to town worked and where you got off so that we can get the real story. Look over there and tell them. Look at them so they can see what you look like. Tell the story. Tell the story that you asked for a lift to town and then go on with your own story.
Linda: I asked the baas for a hike so the baas gave me a hike to town. When we got to town he dropped me off at the garage.
Woman: Is that how far you wanted to go?
Linda: Yes.
Woman: So meneer gave you the lift. You did not want to get in at the front because you people are used to riding on the back because you like the wind and stuff. So just tell the real story there.
Linda: Meneer asked me to sit in front but I said no it's hot and I'll sit on the back because I'm used to it.
Woman: And? You at least got to town safely? Why did you get into the cage on the back rather than in front?
Linda: Because it was hot I myself said I will get on the back in the cage.
Woman: And the meneer always helps people who want a lift from there to town so we think we're doing a good thing but no we see other people are rubbing the story the wrong way. So this mustn't be too long a story just say you appreciate it every time someone helps you because you are far from town and it's not easy to get a lift to town.
Linda: Yes.
Woman: Yes
