THERE were big smiles when Paul Mashatile paid a visit to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at her Orlando West home in Soweto.

The Mother of the Nation, who has been sickly lately, was discharged from hospital two months ago.

Mashatile, ANC chairman in Gauteng, told the media afterwards that Madikizela-Mandela was fine.

However, the media were not allowed inside the yard.

Mashatile said: “This was just a courtesy visit. I last saw her when she was in hospital. Mama Winnie is doing well and is in high spirits. She told me she misses campaigning which she would have been involved in.

“After this visit I’m feeling more motivated too.”

Mashatile spent about an hour with the struggle icon, who was said to be in bed just before his visit. In March, Madikizela-Mandela was admitted to a Joburg hospital where she underwent back surgery.
