“ATTACKS on African cultures by people who don’t understand them won’t be tolerated.
“We urge traditional leaders to fight with all their powers to ensure that their tradition is recognised and respected.”
These were the words of deputy minister of co-operative governance and traditional affairs, Obed Bapela.
He was speaking at the Capricorn Heritage Celebration in Ga-Dikgale Village, Limpopo on Friday.
Bapela spoke about a social media attack on an Ndebele model who took part in the Miss Indoni pageant last year.
“The model left her breasts exposed as the tradition of the Ndebele allows, but some people said her appearance was nudity.
“We want to say to you traditional leaders, this is our culture and tradition.
“We must all fight for it to be respected and practised with pride.
“We are in Africa and our traditions will never be undermined by people who don’t understand them.”
Kgosi Malesela Dikgale, chairman of the House of Traditional Leaders, said they were proud to celebrate their tradition and culture.
He encouraged the youth to take pride in their culture.
“As Africans, we should learn to protect one another,” Dikgale said.
“This is our culture and we must not allow anyone to divert us from it.”
