BEING a virgin used to be an honour and it was shameful to fall pregnant while at school.

But today’s youngsters think of falling pregnant as more of an honour than a disgrace! Now 15 young girls from VM Kwinana High School in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, are teaching pupils to say no to sex though their Xhosa dance.

Aged 12 – 19, they are proud of their culture. When they perform, people in the audience often whisper among themselves: “These pupils from VM Kwinana High are virgins”.

Sesethu Nkombisa (19) said: “People label us as virgin dancers. They know none of us has babies. When we interview girls who want to join us, we firmly state that we only rope in girls who have never had sex.”

She added the talented group has different kinds of activities.

“We have acting, poetry and all types of entertaining acts.

“If you don’t know where you are coming from, you won’t know where you are going. We remind each other of our roots.”

Trainer Nomaxabiso Plaatjies (46) said she was sent from the Port Elizabeth Opera House to the school to mentor the girls.

“Auditions were done at the school and pupils from grade 8 to 11 are involved. We want to uplift and remind pupils where they come from.”
