Zamo and Zama Mendu drowned on Saturday afternoon.

ZAMA and Zamo Mendu were twins born 10 years ago.

And on Saturday the young twins died together!

Zama and Zamo, from V section in Umlazi, tragically drowned at Mfongosi River while looking for plastic container lids for their school work.

They were in grade 4 at Manzolwandle Primary School.

Their mum Fikile Mendu (40), said the pain caused by her children’s sudden death was unbearable. She said what made matters worse is that she is single mother.

“I am unemployed. We’ve been surviving on their support grant. I don’t know where I’m going to get the money to bury them,” said Fikile.

She said on the day of the incident her kids told her they were going to a nearby tuckshop to collect plastic container lids.

“They didn’t tell me they would also go as far as the river. I was shocked when police came and took me to the river. They didn’t explain why we were going there,” Fikile said.

She said she nearly had a heart attack when she found out that it was her twins who were lying dead, wrapped in a silver emergency blanket. Zama and Zamo’s two friends survived and are still fighting for their lives in hospital.

Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said an inquest docket was opened at Umlazi cop shop.

“Two children drowned in the Mfongosi River near Madiba Mbutho Road on Saturday at about 4pm.

“Two others were taken to hospital for medical attention. Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,”she said.
