A MAN believed to be a vagrant living next to the railway has died.

He was crushed by a train at the railway line below Joe Slovo and Dennis Webster Streets in the Durban CBD yesterday.

A witness told Daily Sun he wasone of the homeless people living next to the railway. “They’ve built plastic shacks and take drugs. He was knocked over by a train while trying to cross to the other side.”

Rescue Care Paramedics spokesman Garrith Jamieson said: “The man believed to be in his 30s was run over by a train. The cops’ search and rescue unit and Metro police were at the scene. We’re trying to find what led to it.”

Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident. “At 9am a 30-year-old man crossing the railway line was allegedly knocked over and died. An inquest will be opened for investigation,” she said.
