TWENTY road users died in the Western Cape at the weekend.
Nine pedestrians, six drivers and five passengers were among road traffic fatalities reported on roads during the #PayDayBlues weekend.
Four people were also arrested for various traffic violations.
Traffic services stopped a total of 2 016 vehicles at 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province.
Alcohol breath-testing was performed on 1 168 drivers and 31 were arrested.
The highest breath alcohol reading, which stood at 1,25mg of alcohol/1 000ml of blood, was recorded in Somerset West. This is five times the legal limit of 0,24mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 1 006 vehicles were screened for speeding and 181 speeding offences were recorded.
Fines amounting to R277 650 were issued for various traffic violations. The highest speeds were recorded on the N1, in the Laingsburg service area, and on the N2 in the George and Swellendam areas. Four other arrests were reported.
One was for speeding, two for illegal documentation and a drunken pedestrian was bust in Vredendal. Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said: “Help us create booze-free roads.”
