FORMER public protector Thuli Madonsela has cautiously shown support for the ANC’s next president to be a woman.
However, she has warned that a woman party president, who would likely become state president, should not be a pawn.
Speaking to the Cape Town Press Club, Madonsela said the country deserved a good president that would unite people as the party rebuilt itself.
“I would love for a woman to be president.
“But I would hate it if the woman was being used for show because that would be worse than having a man.”
Her comments come as Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s bid for the job gained momentum, with President Jacob Zuma saying she was capable of leading the organisation.
Other ANC leaders who have put their names in the ring are Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete and deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.
Madonsela yesterday ruled herself out, saying South Africa needs a president who will unite the country.
“I am neither qualified to be president nor interested in that job,” she said.
Speaking about state capture, Madonsela said a commission of inquiry would help disprove false allegations and reveal exactly who was running the country.
“Some of the information I gathered during the investigations made me worried about who really runs the country,” she said.
Madonsela added when she started the investigation, white monopoly capital kept emerging.
“I am not saying there is no such thing as white monopoly capital.
“I am saying the answer to white monopoly capital is not having two families advancing themselves through the State’s resources.”
