ANGRY residents blocked roads and vandalised Diepsloot Mall on Tuesday evening.
Protesters from the kasi, north of Joburg, said they had experienced months of water shortages and power cuts and the process for hiring people to work on construction at the mall was unfair.
Resident Refilwe Mathebula said: “We have gone for months without water. The councillor promised they would deliver water tanks and fill them daily but that hasn’t happened in weeks.”
Councillor Abram Mabuke said: “We have delivered water tanks to supply the community while a water project is under way. The frequent electricity cuts are caused by the high burden placed on single RDP meter boxes by backyard shacks”
Police said no arrests had been made yet.
- The Gauteng police launched a massive manhunt for four men suspected of shooting and killing a constable in Diepsloot on Tuesday. The 31-year-old and a colleague were ambushed. Anyone with information should call CrimeStop at 08600 10111.
