AFTER five thugs stole hundreds of cellphones from a shop on Wednesday, they thought they had got away with their crime.
However, they made a mistake when they went into Nigel Cemetery in Ekurhuleni to load their loot into a Toyota Quantum.
Their actions angered the ancestors, and as they left the cemetery they found an off-duty cop waiting for them. He called the Gauteng Flying Squad for back-up and the wrath of the ancestors rained down on them!
The Flying Squad chased the white Quantum and soon, 10 police cars were racing after it on the R23 Heidelberg Road towards Carnival City in Brakpan. When they realised there was no way out, the suspects abandoned the Quantum and fled on foot.
The cops gave chase and the thugs went running over the veld while a chopper followed them from the sky.
They eventually tripped on long grass and were cornered, handcuffed and taken to the Flying Squad vans. They were then taken straight to the police cells in Brakpan.
The suspects’ skin was scuffed by the long grass, and they were covered in dust from running through dongas while trying to escape. Captain Joep Joubert said four suspects, aged between 32 and 41, were due to appear in court soon. He said a bag containing an undisclosed number of cellphones and four guns were found in the Quantum.
“The off-duty policeman, who was in a private car, was waiting for them as they left the cemetery and followed them without their noticing.
“A case of business robbery was opened,”
