A teenager has been arrested in connection with Tuesday night's murder of a police officer and the wounding of another in Philippi East, the Hawks confirmed today.
The 19-year-old was arrested on Wednesday morning, Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.
He explained how the two police officers were attacked.
"The officers had just finished serving a protection order at one address when they were approached with a similar complaint within the vicinity," Ramovha said.
"On their way to assist, they were suddenly allegedly shot at by about three armed men who subsequently robbed them of their firearms before they fled the scene."
The teenager is accused of being one of the three who opened fire on the officers.
He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday to face charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
