WESTERN Cape ANC secretary Faiez Jacobs claimed that only 16 of 160 branches in the Dullah Omar region are functional. He said that’s why the PEC disbanded its executive.
“ANC Western Cape lost several cadres because of factionalism and the incompetence of leaders in Dullah Omar. We lost comrades like Loyiso Nkohla due to people who think that they own the ANC. It’s not my ANC, it is not your ANC, it is our ANC,” said Jacobs.
He was speaking at the memorial service for Seskhona Movement and ANC member Thulani Zondani, who was murdered on 16 July.
The ANC top six and its national working committee has been in the Western Cape for the past two weekends to try to resolve the crisis in the region.
ANC secretary-general Gwede Matashe said: “We have listened for four days now and considered the issues. The NWC has just closed. We have clear views on what we want to do but we don’t want to make a pronouncement prematurely.”
Hundreds of people gathered at Andile Msizi Hall in Khayelitsha on Tuesday night to remember Zondani. He was part of the team known as the “poo protesters” who dumped poo at the Cape Town International Airport four years ago.
Seskhona chairperson Andile Lili told the crowd that he was shocked when he heard about Zondani’s death.
“I’m still trying to come to terms with the untimely death of our leader, a dedicated young man who had his community at heart,” said Lili.
According to family members Zondani was stabbed to death while returning from a friend’s place.
Khayelitsha Development Forum’s chairman Ndithini Tyhido called for the government to deal with sanitation issues in Khayelitsha and Taiwan.
Presidential candidate Matthews Phosa and former SABC boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng attended the event.
Motsoeneng promised to pay the school fees for Zondani’s children.
“I will help them to achieve what they would have achieved if their father was alive,” he said as the crowd cheered.
Zondani was the father of four children. He was married to Sinovuyo Zondani and also had a twin sister, Thuliswa. His parents Dumile and Nosakhele Zondani said they were pained by his death.
