THOUSANDS of students slept outside the Elangeni TVET College’s Springfield campus in Durban on Wednesday.
The students came from all over the country to register.
When the SunTeam visited the college yesterday the students were still waiting.
Would-be student Sikulindele Mda (19) from the Eastern Cape said she has been sleeping outside the college for the past two nights.
She said: “I arrived here on Tuesday night in order to register as soon as the school’s gate opened on Wednesday.
“But on Wednesday not even one student was registered. It’s now 11pm yet no one has been registered.”
Another hopeful, Xolani Mngadi (20), said he arrived at about 4am only to find thousands of students sleeping outside.
Xolani said on Wednesday some of the students tried to enter the school’s admission block. Police were called, a clash ensued and staff had to be escorted out.
The college’s communication’s officer Lindiwe Bhengu denied that internal squabbles for positions at the college delayed the registration process.
She said students were turned away on Wednesday because some wanted to jump the queue.
“We had to call off registration after that because the situation became uncontrollable. The college’s management then called a meeting where it was decided that security and staff needed to be beefed up to assist with registration.”
She said they managed to register students yesterday.
KZN cops spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said: “No members deployed at the Springfield campus and nothing was reported.
