PEOPLE in Durban yesterday remembered the 15 victims who died when a horror storm hit the city last week.

Songs of worship filled the air as mourners and religious leaders gathered for the memorial service at the Durban City Hall.

EThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede, KZN MEC for the Department of Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo and the acting MEC for the KZN Department of Co-operative Governance, Weziwe Thusi, held a joint memorial service for the families who lost their loved ones in the storm.

Gumede told the families that they were praying for them during this hard time.

“We feel the pain you are going through,” said Gumede.

She added that the dark cloud the families were facing was faced by the whole province.

“As a caring government we are here for you,” said Gumede.

Thabang Moshoeshoe (41), from Umlazi’s V section, told Daily Sun that he lost his mum, Olivia Moshoeshoe (75) in the storm.

“She was going to fetch her medication at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital when she died. She was killed by a wall that fell on her.”

He said she will be buried tomorrow. The last person who was reported missing, Okuhle Kweyama (2) was found yesterday morning in the Mfolozi River.

Thusi said the storm had caused a massive amount of damage. “We will continue cleaning up and making sure that those affected get the necessary help.”

She said the National Disaster Management Fund assisted after the event was declared a disaster.

“Some of those killed were children. Please look after children during storms.

“When rain or strong wind starts, parents should fetch their children from school and make sure that they are inside,” she said.
