ON Monday a 10-year-old pupil died in Empangeni Preparatory School’s sick room!
The incident traumatised pupils and teachers at the school.
A police source said teachers saw the grade 5 pupil in the corridors of the school in Empangeni, northern KZN and noticed something was wrong with her.
“When they went to ask what was wrong, she couldn’t respond and she collapsed. They rushed her to the sick room and called paramedics.”
When the paramedics arrived, it was already too late. Yandiswa was declared dead.
A teacher said although everyone was shocked, learning continued yesterday.
Another teacher added: “When the pupil arrived at school, she was fine. Her death shocked all of us. We had to send home pupils because they were traumatised”.
The pupil’s uncle (30), said the family was devastated. “At the moment, we can’t comment on this. It’s very painful.”
KZN police spokeswoman, Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said an inquest docket was opened at Empangeni Police Station for investigation. “A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
Education spokesman Kwazi Mthethwa said MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana sent his condolences to the family and school.
“It’s so sad that at the beginning of the year we have already lost a pupil who went to school to shape her future.
“For now, we are still in the dark about the cause of death. We will wait for the post mortem results and maybe will then be able to get some closure.”
