WHEN her family started facing difficulties she decided to do something – by starting a shisa nyama to survive.
Now Nthabeleng Motaung, from the Meqheleng kasi near Ficksburg, runs a successful business next to Ficksburg taxi rank, and helps feed her family.
Nthabeleng, who at first wanted to be her own boss but had no idea what kind of business she could go into, is happy with her progress.
The 39-year-old said: “I was sitting at home and I realised the money my husband was getting as a taxi driver was not enough.
“I then worked at one of the shisa nyama shops at Maseru Bridge to make capital and gain some experience.
“After two years we were retrenched, but at least I had already saved some money.
“In 2010 I started my own shisa nyama to help my husband maintain our children.
“My first born is at college studying teaching and the second born is in grade 12. With the money I make at my shisa nyama I manage to help my son pay fees and accommodation.”
Nthabeleng said that women should help their spouses.
“We should bless each other, not like a woman waiting for her husband to bless her. Stop wanting government to give you jobs. People should stop being lazy.
“I do not have proper shelter, but I hope in the near future I will have saved enough to maybe hire a builder. At least the money I make puts bread on the table for my family,” she said.
