TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill yesterday morning by a dead sheep wearing clothes that was lying at the side of the road!

Seven candles of different colours had been tied with muthi and left next to the animal.

Officers were called to the scene in Midrand, Gauteng by shocked residents as people were too frightened to go near the sheep.

Cops said the sheep might have been dumped at the busy intersection in the early hours of the morning.

Resident Thami Ngubane (72) said it was not the first time something like this had happened in the area.

“I am worried because last time, someone in the area died,” said Thami.

However, Katlego Mashaba (36) said he had never before seen anything like it.

He said he was still in bed in his house nearby when he heard people screaming.

“I came out to see the sheep, which had its throat slit and was wearing expensive clothes.

“This must be witchcraft,” he said.

“Why would someone spend so much money to buy a sheep and then just dump it in the street?

“People have money and time to play.”

Ben Mnisi (80), who was also at the scene, said he believed that someone had performed a ritual to get rid of an enemy.

He said, however, he did not think it would be harmful to anyone other than the person it was directed at.

Joburg-based sangoma Mandla Cebekhulu said the sheep could have been killed by someone performing a ritual.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said residents had stopped patrolling cops.

“Since no one opened a case, we cannot comment on it,” he said.

Midrand SPCA inspector Jerry Seemise said it was cruel and against the by-laws to kill an animal in such a manner.
