FORMER KZN premier Senzo Mchunu has yet to confirm whether he will accept a position in parliament.
Sources said Senzo was pushed out because an ANC faction in the province wanted him gone, allegedly for failing to follow orders.
There are rumours that changes in the provincial Cabinet will affect some MECs.
Willies Mchunu is expected to be elected the new premier today.
Sihle Zikalala, the ANC’s KZN chairman, said the party is fully behind Senzo as he is expected to go to the National Assembly, while ANCYL leader Thami Ngubane said it is time for younger leaders.
Daily Sun broke the story last year that Senzo had been asked to step down, but Sibusiso Magwaza, who was his spokesman then, dismissed the rumour.
Willies’ spokesman, Kwanele Ncalane, yesterday said he was not allowed to talk about recent developments, but an ANC leader said Willies will take over as premier from Senzo.
The DA’s Zwakele Mncwango said Senzo’s resignation is proof that there are serious battles within the ANC in KZN.
When Daily Sun called Senzo yesterday, he said he released a statement on Monday and that was enough. The statement indicated his disappointment at how the entire matter was handled.
KZN ANC secretary Super Zuma said Willies was proposed by the ANC but other political parties will get a chance to put up their premier candidates and then voting will take place.
