THE South African Social Security Agency offices in KwaMashu Hostel have been shut down.

As of Monday, all services have stopped and people have been asked to use alternative offices in Inanda and Phoenix.

The offices – located in the heart of the hostel – have been in operation for the past 20 years. They serviced the hostel dwellers as well as residents from certain parts of KwaMashu kasi.

Sassa spokesman Mbizeni Mdlalose said they decided to move the
offices to a safer environment.

The move is believed to be linked to the ongoing killings at the hostel.

The move has come as a surprise to many and it is seen as an inconvenience.

Resident and pensioner Masomi Mgasela (62), who suffers from arthritis, said the news of the closure was a heavy blow to her.

“The relocation of this office is the worst news I have heard today.

“I only found out this morning,” said Masomi.

Sassa regional executive manager Pearl Bhengu said: “There were numerous safety and security breaches experienced in the office, that put the lives of employees and clients in jeopardy.

“The lives of our employees and clients are important. The decision was taken by management after some serious deliberation.”
