MODUPI FELT it wasn’t fair to try and serve his clients and his employer.

So he burnt his bones to focus on being a truck driver.

BUT HE FORGOT ABOUT THE ANCESTORS . . .

“My ancestors got very angry. I have bad dreams and they warn me that worse is still to come,” said Modupi Rampai (63) from Heilbron, Free State.

Modupi practised as a sangoma for 23 years and was married for 14 years.

“My wife and I were happy. We didn’t have much money but we managed,” he said.

“I thought life would be better for us when our financial situation improved, but I was wrong.”

And how wrong he was!

When he destroyed the bones it was not an act of defiance.

He merely decided he would focus on doing one job well.

Modupi said he got the job as a truck driver in 2013 and after two months he burnt the bones.

But a few months later things in his life turned bad.

People fought with him for nothing.

His wife left him.

The money he earned somehow ran out without him knowing how.

He fell into debt with nothing to show for it.

And he has even left his job as a truck driver because he couldn’t focus on the road.

“I felt the ancestors had turned their backs on me,” he told Daily Sun.

“I consulted a local sangoma who told me I have to slaughter a grey cow that has given birth to three calves before things will get better.”

He said he wants to apologise and get his bones back again.

“I will never try to get extra jobs.

“Being greedy causes problems,” said Modupi.

Sangoma Khanya Mokhele from Kutlwanong, near Odendaalsrus, Free State said there are many people who serve as sangomas and have other jobs too.

“The ancestors would have accepted if he was a truck driver and a sangoma but he angered them by destroying his bones,” said Khanya.

“All he has to do is to slaughter either a goat or cow for an apology ceremony and he will get bones again.”
