AN EMBARRASSED sangoma has been defrauded of R20 000 by a man who promised to turn it into R100 000.
The woman (60) from KwaNobuhle in Nelson Mandela Bay said she was left with a pile of useless black papers.
The trouble started on Sunday when she was approached by a man while she was walking down Mabandla Road.
“He looked desperate and said he wanted someone who could throw the bones for him. I agreed to do the job,” she said.
“While we were walking he told me he could make me rich. When we got to my house he asked for a R100 note. He put it into a glass with a black paper and poured powder over it. A few minutes later he took two R100 notes out.”
Taken by the move she went to draw R20 000 so he could turn it into R100 000.
“He took my R20 000 and put it with the black papers and asked me to fetch water.
“When I came back he had a roll of papers wrapped in sticky tape and told me the money had to be locked in a room as he had to go buy more chemicals.
“He told me to transfer R1 000 for the chemicals.”
Her 34-year-old daughter became suspicious when the man kept asking for more money. When they went to look for the money in the room it was gone.
Police Captain Gerda Swart has advised the sangoma to open a case.
