SHE is known as someone who heals troubled people.
But for many abandoned children, she is much more than that.
Zanele Madonsela (58) discovered her true calling when her ancestors led her to become a foster mum!
Zanele, from Snake Park in Soweto, said she started having sleepless nights soon after becoming a sangoma.
“I would hear children crying around my bed. I heard my ancestors telling me there were children who needed my care.
“I asked social workers how to get permission to look after children who needed care.
“They gave me the go ahead and I took in three children at the beginning in 2004.
“I now have 10 children aged between one and 22.
“My ancestors are at peace and the children are very happy and highly protected.”
“Social workers often visit my home to check up on the wellbeing of the kids. I have never let them down.
“Whenever there is a problem, my ancestors tell me ahead of time and I gather my children to pray.
“We chase all evil spirits from the house and live a happy life.”
Some of her charges left home when they became adults, and some are even married.
“It puts a smile on my face knowing that my ancestors
directed me to care for these souls.”
Social development spokesman Mbangwa Xaba said: “Government supports initiatives by community members who look after vulnerable children.
“Our department will help Zanele get her place legalised and assist her to apply for
funding to aid the children.”
