WORKERS and customers at a petrol station in Eshowe, KZN had a rude shock when armed thugs stormed the place and bombed the safe.
The incident happened early yesterday morning at the Sasol Excel garage and shop.
Several armed men entered the shop and ordered staff members at gunpoint to lie on the floor.
KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said customers at the petrol station when the gang struck were also forced into the shop at gunpoint before the explosion was set off.
“The men arrived in a grey Ford Fiesta and a white Nissan X-Trail,” said Gwala.
She said the explosion caused damage to the cashier area only.
No staff members or customers were injured during the incident.
“The suspects then took cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of money from the bombed safe before fleeing the scene in their getaway cars.
“No arrests have been made and our investigation continues.
“Anyone with information regarding this incident should call CrimeStop on 08600 10111,” said Gwala.
She said a case of business robbery was opened by Eshowe cops.
The incident came shortly after three of the five men arrested for armed robbery at the same garage on 5 January this year were sentenced last week at the local magistrates court.
