BOOZERS on Friday bust fake Eskom employees when they tried to rob the owner of a tavern.
The situation soon spiralled out of control. Cops had to disperse furious residents of Freedom Park, south of Joburg, with rubber bullets to rescue the two thugs!
Tsholofelo Thomas (31) – the son of the tavern owner – said the men told his father they were collecting outstanding bills and he had been fined R10 000.
“My father didn’t have the money, so he gave them R2 000 and three bottles of whisky. However, they weren’t satisfied and wanted more, leading to an argument.”
Tsholofelo said a man who was drinking outside overheard the conversation and recognised the men, who had pulled the same stunt at another tavern. He called community members, who got ready to beat them. After the cops had dispersed the crowd, the suspects confessed that they were not Eskom workers and agreed to pay back the money and the booze.
Nyanisa Mqulwana (44) – the man who recognised the two suspects – said he locked them in the tavern during the chaos to make sure they didn’t get away.
Cops had to rush the suspects out of the area as community members threw stones at their van.
Eldorado Park station commander Brigadier Leroy Nolan could not comment, saying he was busy at a meeting in Pretoria.
